There is no denying that the kids, grandparents, and cousins all had a fabulous time holidaying together in Thailand. That is, once we finally got there. A nine hour flight with kids and not being able to sleep isn’t something I will be rushing to do again any time soon. However, once we finally did get to our destination it was lovely.
We stayed at the JW Marriot Khao Lak Resort and Spa at Takua Pa District, Phang Nga, Thailand. It is known for having the largest pool in the world.
The first morning when we woke up at sparrow farts with serious jet lag my little fish wanted to explore the pool. I figured it was a good opportunity to swim without the rig moral of covering ourselves from top to toe in sun cream. The one on one time with Livy in the tranquil warm water and silence (except for our whispers) was the perfect start to the day.
Adults and children alike loved the pool that wrapped around the resort. We were able to step out our back door and walk our way to the swim up bar and restaurant. Here the adults could chat whilst the kids happily played in the water.
We had the choice of multiple restaurants and bars. An amazing wedding closed some sections of the resort at certain times. But, we weren’t put out by this at all. We loved seeing the magic of an Indian wedding ceremony that went for days and days. Funnily enough the child that we thought was going to be the hardest to feed tried everything. She ate the best she has in months.
Bamboo Shark Sanctuary, Thailand
There is a bamboo shark nursery within the resort that we had to visit. Here you can learn about the rescue and breeding missions that are taking place for the reef sharks. Naturally Lara bought the shirt and Olivia god a stuffed toy shark to support the foundation.
We have family friends who have enjoyed holidays here before. They recommended a private tour guide who took us on a great day trip. We explored the natural wonders and had a history lesson on the drive.
Visiting the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre in the Thai Mueang District, Phang Nga was eye opening. The kids got to see how many baby turtles needed help. They got to see happy baby turtles almost ready for release, and sick baby turtles needing care. Naturally there were adult turtles with flipper damage that were lifetime residents. It did sadden us that even the lifelong residents were just swimming around in a boring pool with no seagrass or any environment enrichment.
At first I was skeptical about going and seeing elephants. As guests on this tour I politely enquired about the animal wellbeing before committing to the trip. I was assured that the elephants weren’t ridden where we were going. The tourists weren’t there to be entertained, they were there to pay for elephant food. That suited me just fine.
The Elephant Seaside Retreat at Lam Kaen, Thai Mueang District, Phang Nga 82210, Thailand was a delight. My family and I talked with the elephants. Whilst they didn’t understand my English I felt that they appreciated it when I asked if I could pat them. One bowed it’s head down to my hand for another scratch. They were also rather cheeky asking the kids for bananas and other treats.
What I’d Do Differently Next Time
What I didn’t like about our trip to Thailand and back home was the long uncomfortable flight. I couldn’t sleep. I was particularly envious of the person next to me who had a fabulous neck pillow. Next time I fly internationally I’m going to have one of these nifty hand pump neck pillows.
Would I recommend that Australian families head all the way to Khau Lak for a holiday? Not if you travel like me and don’t sleep whilst in the air or on the road. But if you are one of those skillful people who can sleep anywhere than the ten plus hour trip to JW Marriot Khao Lak Resort and Spa is worth it. If only there was a resort like it in Australia’s Northern Territory, that’s somewhere I really want to visit.
I must say, my favourite moment of the whole trip was when the four of us went for a beach walk. We got away from everyone and didn’t need to be anywhere at anytime. Simply connecting with nature with my family is the best. And I can do that in Australia, I just need to put it in the calendar.
What’s the biggest take away kids get from a holiday in Thailand? They all talk about how fabulous the breakfast buffet is.
