When you think “successful” who comes to mind?

These days society often defines successful people by the house, car and boat that they own. Oh, and lets not forget their social media following. This is not how I define success.

Who is the first person you think of when you think of a successful person? I’ve got more than one person. The common thing is that I see the person with a huge glowing smile. The kind of smile that lights up their eyes. It’s contagious. You know those people that others say “they light up a room”. That’s what comes to mind.

A life filled with joy is a successful one

Success isn’t measured in dollars, cars, boats or high heels and handbags if we are looking at it from a stereotypical female perspective. True success is simply being happy.

In my mind successful people all share one thing. They do what makes them happy. They priorities their own happiness and in doing so their joy enables them to give joy to others.

Successful People in the Limelight

As an Australian I’m inspired by other Australians, in particular people who I can relate to. People like Australian actress Teresa Palmer who is a few years younger than me and a successful working mother. If you haven’t seen her outstanding performance in A Discovery of Witches go and watch it. Palmer is one of those people who’s auras you can feel onscreen. Being in the same room as her you can feel the magic that she brings to people around her. Smiles and laughs are contagious. Teresa Palmer is one of my inspirational people that I try to think of on my down days. She owns her inner magic and sees the joy in the every day.

You may be picking up on the magic theme here. If you are looking for a read Deborah Harnkness’ magical All Souls Trilogy is an escape to a magical world. Deborah Harkness is a successful person who has made her passion of magic and writing a profession. She has also beaten cancer and managed to fill her heart with joy throughout the painstaking process. In doing so she has spread joy and hope to others.

Everyday Successful People

My best friend who I’ve grown up with since high school is my everyday successful person. Sure, she has an MBA and a great career, but what I see is someone who is extremely emotionally intelligent. Someone who has done a tonne of self reflection and has found her best self. In doing so she is also bringing out the best in everyone around her. And that is what makes life a success.

Most importantly, a successful person is one who loves and can laugh at themselves.

Friends laughing and having fun

This post was inspired by a writing prompt. I’m glad I saw it since I haven’t thought about what a successful like looks like for a long time. I needed this simple reminder, hopefully my thoughts help you with your perspective.

A life filled with joy is a successful one.
