Unexpected Things to Do on a Beautiful Canberra Weekend Getaway

Luckily I had the hostess with the ‘mostest’ and her partner show me the beauty that Canberra has to offer. Whenever I go anywhere I try to get a locals experience of the area. Being shown around by my friend who moved to Canberra and her partner who has lived there for years was a treat.

The running joke was that everything is only 10 minutes away, but it truly is. Even a 20 minute drive from one side of town to the other is enjoyable as the traffic just flows.

Walks in Canberra

Canberra has a bounty of walks to chose from. We enjoyed a bush walk and a city walk this weekend. I’m looking forward to more walks together next time I’m down.

One Tree Hill Canberra

Naturally we ticked off one of the most famous walks, the One Tree Hill walk. This trail is amazingly well maintained, and well fertilised by cow patties. Sadly we didn’t get to talk to any cows on Saturday, but you can often say hi to them. Unsurprisingly this walk provides lots of beautiful views across the hills. What was a very pleasant surprise to me was all the bird life.

The One Tree Hill walk is part of the 145 km Canberra Centenary Trail. It is an 8.4km enjoyable hike with stairs in parts to make the climb very manageable. We were happily sitting at the lookout drinking water and eating apples, when a young boy suddenly appeared. He had ran ahead of his Mum. If that doesn’t say it’s a great family walk I don’t know what does.

Canberra’s city Bridge to Bridge walk is also thoroughly enjoyable. It is almost completely flat, and it an easy 5km loop. With plenty of options to stop and enjoy coffee or lunch on Lake Burley Griffin. You can even book a free guided tour walk if that’s your thing.

My biggest surprise on this walk was spotting Rodin sculptures along the lake. Joy!

Places to Eat in Canberra

We were spoilt with breakfast and coffee at home, so I can’t give you recommendations from this visit. If you ask me I will check in with my friends for local recommendations.

For lunch we thoroughly enjoyed Banh Mi from a local bakery in the back streets. You won’t stumble upon the Vietnamese Bakery and Cafe Fyshwick on a weekend getaway. Go and find it for a delicious $10 lunch.

For the evening we were called to Molly Bar with the lure of live music. Sadly, we were there on the wrong night, but have all intentions of going on a Sunday for live jazz. The bar bites and cocktails we had were thoroughly enjoyable. And whilst the place was packed the crowd was super friendly and everyone moved around each other happily.

Things to Do

Luckily we were visiting on the Canberra Potters Fired Up open day weekend. So, we got to completely immerse ourselves with creative people. This was a truly interactive event where you go to meet the artists and touch their amazing creations. There’s also the option to purchase a one of a kind item. The bonus was that we crafted and didn’t have to set up or clean up.

There were three happy 40 year old women dipping clay in glaze. AND making fart jokes whilst the Raku Firing was taking place. We have vowed to never loose our child like selves.

It’s time to get the air dry clay out again with my daughters…Halloween decorations on the way.
