Vertical planters are all the rage overseas at the moment, so I’m going to give it a try in my Australian urban farm/homestead/backyard. Vegetable gardening is great for saving money, but if you aren’t making the most of the sunshine you have, growing delicious food may be harder than it needs to be.
Vertical planters are a perfect hack for small space productivity. I’m also hoping that this new system helps with reducing our water use for the vegetable garden.
My food gardening has had a huge shake up since moving house. Our old home of 14 years was north facing and I had plenty of sun to make my gardens grow. This bigger house has a smaller yard and faces west so there’s significantly less sunshine and I’m certainly feeling that this winter. It’s the first cold winter we’ve had in Sydney, Australia for years now, and it is taking it’s tole on my garden and soul.
If you’re a small-space apartment or balcony gardener, growing vertically is your best friend. You’ll get WAY more yield out of the same square footage, AND you can follow the sun.
Vertical Planter Inspiration
To manage my gardening blues I’ve been watching people growing their own food on YouTube. Two of my latest favourite growers have been having great success with GreenStalk vertical planters.
Cassandra at https://www.youtube.com/@BecomingaFarmGirl helps me remember that my old garden was easy and we ate from it every day, she keeps it real and was the first person who exposed me to the amazing GreenStalk planter.
At the time of posting this video I can’t get GreenStalk planters in Australia, but I’m sharing the associate link from another channel I love, Mari’s Garden and Kitchen https://www.youtube.com/@MarisGardenandKitchen show her some love by using her affiliate link if you’re in the delivery zone https://greenstalkgarden.com/?rstr=MARISGARDEN
What Vertical Planters Are The Best?
I’ve seen lots of YouTubers using Greenstalk planters and they look fabulous. Unfortunately they aren’t available here in Australia at the moment, but it is at the top of my wish list.
For now I’m using the Green Fingers 5 Tier Vertical Garden that I purchased from this link https://amzn.to/4fsHxaz. I’ve only been using it for a few months so I can’t tell you yet how well the plastic holds up to the Australian sun.
Things to Remember When Gardening in Vertical Planters
- Water from the top only, you don’t want to drown your plants.
- Rotate a 1/4 of a turn regularly, at least weekly.
- Use light soil such as seed raising mix.
- Make sure your vertical planter is on wheel so it can be easily relocated during the seasons.
