About The Beaches Farm Girl Crew

Hey there friend, its nice to see you here. Thanks for visiting, and wanting to know a bit about me. In which case, I should really say us, because I’m on this journey with my great little family.

I’m an eco-warrior, self confessed greenie on a journey to make less of a negative impact on our environment. My journey involves growing our own food, and dealing with lots of our waste onsite. We have chickens, a worm farm and a compost bin as part of this mission.

I’m proud to be raising two little eco-warriors. Every day we do our little bit to look after the planet and make a difference.

My two daughters are in primary school. Since their preschool days I’ve heard of them telling friends, teachers and random people that straws kill turtles, thanks to a video we watched at Taronga Zoo. They also tell people to get a reusable coffee cup. Obviously we are passionate, confident people that will give a voice to creatures that don’t have one.

We are far from perfect, perfect simply isn’t sustainable. We just mindfully do what we can every day. Occasionally we succumb to the odd take away sushi container, but we balance that by using our own chopsticks, which has the benefit of the kids eating with training chopsticks.

Everyone can make less of a negative impact on our precious world. Together we will learn how to make a difference.

The Beginning

I started this blog in the Summer of 2010. I was keeping a visual diary of my veggie garden, chickens and new lifestyle on Sydney’s northern beaches for myself. It quickly became a way of showing my family and friends what I was doing in my fun time. Before I knew it I was addicted to keeping a visual diary.

I’m guilty of having grand plans of achieving a hundred things in one day. But I’m learning to give myself a break, and do the fun stuff first. We all know the housework will never go anywhere.

My Perfect Day

My idea of a perfect day is waking up to a spotless house, cooking up a delicious breakfast for my family with food picked freshly from the garden, dancing, playing piano and heading down to the beach. Naturally a cleaning fairy flies in and deals with all the mess whilst we’re out. All before coming home to play in the garden, pick dinner, cook and collapse in bed with a good book.

If you were to visit us at home you would more than likely find me pottering around the vegetable garden and chicken coop with my four babies. My two fur babies Jet and Baxter, and the humans who have debunked them.

I can happily go and play in the garden, sit and craft or write and ignore the dusting that needs doing. I can also just as easily leave the house without the beds made to go and spend quality time with the people I love. That’s my balance, and I encourage everyone to follow suite. Screw the perfect Instagram photos.

Before having kids I put a whole heap of energy in to growing healthy organic food that we pick from the soil rather than a supermarket. This was a very successful venture for quite some time. But with the added responsibility of keeping tiny people alive, vegetables are no longer the priority.

Growing Food Takes Time

The best part of gardening is that my children love picking and eating strawberries, beans and mint straight from the garden. Thanks to our herbs and chickens, we eat something from the garden most days, but nothing like I used to before becoming a Mum. So I’m taking slow steps to get back to that.

We are a very long way off being self sufficient, but we do have the goal of getting there. This is my record of our journey, I’d love for you to join us.

It takes a village, and my daughters and I love nothing more than having our friends in our little suburban farm.

2023 Update

Somehow it doesn’t feel right removing the words above to bring them up to date. I think it’s mostly because I don’t want to remove the memories of my first two fur babies who we have said goodbye to.

In 2023 we unexpectedly moved house. It wasn’t a big move, we just went north to the next suburb. But saying goodbye to my old farm and setting up a new biodiverse garden has been a mission.

Since moving in we have renovated the backyard by replacing lawn with a native garden, adding two succulent gardens on the deck and creating a new garden down the side of the house.

Naturally the first thing we did was put a vegetable garden in the backyard where it can get the most sun. This area is rather limited, especially since the chicken run is there too. It is set up for permaculture with the chickens, vegetable garden and worm farm all close to the house, especially the kitchen. We also installed new taps close by for easy irrigation.

I still need to buy drip hoses, but I secretly like engaging with the garden by watering it and talking to the creatures that are starting to visit.

On top of moving house in 2023 we welcomed a new puppy to the family. He was planned well before moving house became a thing. But needless to say I took on more than I could chew last year, and now in 2024 I’m still trying to catch up.

I’m hoping that by nourishing our new home and yard she will nourish us.

Hopefully you find our new adventure entertaining and inspirational in parts.
