I’ve been eagerly watching Menya Monaka restaurant being built in Mona Vale, and excited for it’s opening. The moment I peeked inside, the light and welcoming décor made an impression. I needed to know what this restaurant was going to be serving.
To my families delight Menya Monaka specialises in Japanese Ramen.
As always when eating at a Japanese restaurant we started off with Edamame. These beans had a slight touch of chilli which was a delicious and refreshing change.
We had a long day and a busy week to follow, so we opted for a quick, healthy meal. The plan was to all have ramen, as it’s quick, healthy and satisfying. But Lara couldn’t resist ordering Pork Gyoza. She declared it the best pork gyoza she’s ever had, and she’s tried many. She also got the Nori Shio Chips and the rest of us were thrilled that she let us try them. I must admit that I probably wouldn’t have shared if I was her. Everyone agreed that next time we’ll have to order a large serving of chips.
Ramen Restaurant
For our first visit the rest of the family made traditional choices. After all when a restaurant specialises in ramen, it’s a must to try their ramen.
Olivia chose the Tokyo Tonkotsu ramen. Given the choice, she’d eat noodles and broth every day. She tried the Shio broth and plans to try a different one next time. With a mouthful of noodles, she exclaimed, “These are the best noodles EVA!”.
We had to convince Olivia to try the 7 minute egg. Honestly, Mark said “Olivia don’t get it taken out of yours, if you don’t eat it I will”. On that note she decided to give it a try and is now a convert.
Surprisingly she didn’t ask for most of the ingredients to be taken out of her meal. Instead, she asked for the pork, 7 minute egg, and nori seaweed only. Our waitress was impressed that a 9-year-old knew exactly what she wanted and didn’t even blink at the request.
The Monaka family always makes everyone feel welcome.
Mark opted for the Tokyo Tonkotsu Shio, with no changes. He’s looking forward to trying it with miso broth next time, and soy after that.
I had the Tokyo Torigara with miso broth, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My whole family tasted my miso broth and wanted to drink it all. There wasn’t a drop of miso or a sliver of noodles left in my bowl. I was completely satisfied.
Next time I plan to try the Vegan Ramen. Though I was craving chicken that night, and I’m glad I listened to my body—it was perfectly sliced and cooked. .I can’t think of a time when I’ve enjoyed eating chicken so much.
Next Time
We didn’t even have to discuss whether we’d return to Menya Monaka. The whole family immediately began talking about what we’d try next time. I’m looking forward to trying their Agedashi Tofu and Miso Eggplant which are two of my favorite Japanese dishes.
We’re lucky that the northern beaches restaurant scene continues to thrive. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner at Menya Monaka in Mona Vale!
