Have you ever wondered why we don’t regularly tell the people that are special to us that we love them?
This post could be about so many things. Why do people of sound mind get dealt with shit bodies that they can’t live in, whilst people who have lost their marbles and want to check out continue to live? Why do those who go to church every Sunday get dealt cancer, whilst thieves and murderers walk free?
Instead this post is about our, and I’m referring to society as a whole, lack of ability to simply tell those that are special to us that we love them regularly, and treasure the difference 10 minutes can make.
We are all too afraid to tell family and friends we love them, even though we know they love us back. I’ve recently learnt that it takes the two biggest and most certain things in life to force us to realise the importance of three little words and put them out there; birth and death. Only 3 weeks ago one of my best friends had the most beautiful little boy, and it was funny how when she started to get close to her due date we three girls all of a sudden actually said ‘love you’ to each other. Now it is a regular thing that means a lot.
Yesterday my whole family was together celebrating the life of my amazing Mama, the strongest most determined and positive woman any one could ever know. Naturally we were also mourning the loss as we are all going to miss her like crazy. Although we are all grateful that we had our chance to say goodbye, and she is at peace and no longer in pain. But I think last night was probably the second time I told my cousin that I love him, and possibly the first time that I’ve told my soon to be Mum-in-law and brother-in-law. Why do we wait for such monumental occasions to open up our hearts and let those who are special to us know just how special they really are?
Perhaps it’s my reading of Brene Brown that is helping to drag this out of me.
I don’t know if all couples are the same, but in 9 days I will be married to my best friend, and we tell each other we love each other every day. Mark even made a point of saying goodbye to me twice this morning and telling me he loved me with a big cuddle. But we must remember that those words aren’t just meant for the one special person in our lives, they are meant for all the special people that help us be who we are.
